Sustainability Challenge – who will become the sustainability champion?

Sustainability in everyday life and in all situations

What do you know about sustainability? At first, the term probably makes you think about our environment and about the sparing usage of its resources. But sustainability also relates to other areas of life: from sociology, the economy to the financial market and private consumption – sustainability can be lived in almost in every area of life, as the term roughly means a long-term and continuous effect. Sustainability does not only play a role in how you lead your own life, but it is also nowadays a set part of company strategies.

Why is sustainability so important to us? The Earth’s resources are not limitless. Year on year, the so-called Earth overload day is getting closer. It shows just how important it is to handle our finite resources carefully. In 2021 for example, Germany had already used up its available resources for the year by the 5th May. From this point, we require more resources that we actually have.

The concept

The »Sustainability Challenge« is carried out in teams of 5 to 7 people. As the name already suggests, this team event is about a challenge. That means that the team which has collected the most points by the end is the sustainability champion.

The team event doesn’t only require spontaneity, creativity and talent to improvise from the participants, but also speed and the willingness – equipped with a tablet and further material – to walk swiftly from station to station. The »Sustainability Challenge« consists of a total of 12 stations (photos/paintings) with images of people. Each station tells a story. You have seven questions to answer or tasks to solve. For example, Emil is there who talks to the team about meat consumption, or a chef tells our team members about seasonal groceries and gives appropriate tasks. The range stretches from multiple choice questions, text tasks, true or false questions, photo or video challenges, to crafts and creative tasks.

Team takeaways

The participants don’t only get to know their colleagues better, they are also playfully introduced to different aspects relating to the topic of sustainability:

  • ecological sustainability and the environmentally friendly used of resources
  • ecological sustainability and the sparing use of energy
  • social sustainability and topics such as diversity and equality

The teams interact with each other, get to know each other beyond the team, move, have a change to a conference or convention and can dedicate themselves to an important subject at the same time. The »Sustainability Challenge« improves the communication amongst the team members and makes sure there is fun and variation beyond the normal working day. In this way, the atmosphere in the team grows.

Area of application

The »Sustainability Challenge« is a diverse, teachable and exciting team event that is ideal as an in-between or finishing point to loosen up a convention. The »Sustainability Challenge« is excellent for teams that would like to have fun together and would like to learn something about sustainability at the same time. It doesn’t matter if it’s a conference or sustainability training event, the team event conveys sustainability strategies in a playful way and encourages discussion amongst the participants.

Implementation

The »Sustainability Challenge« can take place indoors and outdoors. Up to 500 participants can take part in the event. The interactive challenge can be booked as a presented event.

Another team event on the sustainability strategy is our
“Greenworld”, which is played as a board game and is led by our BITOU moderators. All the materials used for the board game come from sustainable production. Greenworld promotes communication between team members and provides fun and variety outside of everyday working life.
